Longest Word with only One Vowel

A reader of this site wonders:

"Is there an 8 letter word with 1 vowel in the fourth position?"

In the English language, there is such a word, but it's not the longest word in the language with only one vowel. There is a nine letter word with only one vowel. To be fair, though, the eight letter word is a root of the nine letter word.

Feel free to venture your best guess in the comment section below.

If you're not having any luck thinking of the word, maybe you need to strengthen your vocabulary.

I'd suggest reading a big book, like the Oxford Unabridged Dictionary, although you might find you're not strong enough to lift it.

Well I found I did have the "strength" to lift the book and find the word!
Good one, with a great clue that made it FUN, Erik !

i think it might be indivisibility, anyone got a better one???

"Indivisibility" has 7 vowels. Six of them are I's and one is a Y.

Unknown said...

the y isn't a vowel in indivisibility. strengths. nine letters, one vowel

'indivisibility' hahahahahahahahahaha

if using the same vowel numerous times is a possibility the longest word is actually

"strengthlessness"

16 letters. 1 vowel (used 3 times)

The word is "strengths". Add the "s" to the end and it's a 9-letter word.

Y counts as a vowel."A e i o u and y" are all vowels.so STYLISTS, TRIPTYCHS, SCRATCHY, and RHYTHMIC all have two vowels and therefore dont count.

The "y" is a vowel in INDIVISIBILITY and in any word in which it makes a vowel sound! It's a consonant when it makes the "yuh" sound, as in yak, yellow, eye, etc.
